JERUSALEM, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- Bedouin leaders in Israel condemned on Monday the "despicable" deadly attack by a young Bedouin in the southern city of Be'er Sheva on Sunday evening, amidst a wave of Palestinian attacks.
The perpetrator of the attack was identified as Muhand al-Okabi, 21, an Arab-Bedouin citizen of Israel from the Bedouin town of Hura in the Negev Desert.
On Sunday, Al-Okabi stormed a bus terminal in Be'er Sheva with a knife and a gun. He first tried to stab a woman, who sprayed him with pepper spray, and then he shot a soldier and snatched his M-16 rifle, shooting in all directions.
Security forces shot him dead after he killed a 19-year-old Israeli soldier and wounded 26 others, police said.
"We utterly and unreservedly condemn this despicable act and reject violence of any sort," said Mohammed al-Nabari, mayor of Hura.
"We call upon all the residents of the Negev, Arabs and Jews, to preserve and protect the relations between the two peoples for the benefit of us all," he added.
There are about 192,000 Bedouins who are indigenous nomadic Arab dwelling the southern Israeli Negev Desert. Half of them live in about 40 villages not recognized by the Israeli government.
Israel's National Insurance Institute said these villages are the poorest in Israel, overpopulated and without infrastructure.
An Eritrean asylum seeker, who was shot and beaten by a mob after being mistakenly identified as an accomplice in the attack, died of his wounds on Monday, said a medical source.
Police identified him as Havtom Zarhum, a 29-year-old asylum seeker from Eritrea, who was on his way home after arriving in Be'er Sheva to apply for a visa.
Zarhum, who was apparently mistaken as a second assailant, was shot by police. An angry mob then hit him, kicked his head and threw chairs and a bench at him, a CCTV video footage showed.
Police launched Monday an investigation into the incident but has yet to apprehend any suspects.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded to the incident on Monday saying that "no one should make a law unto themselves," adding that civilians at the scene "should have let security forces do their work."
The attack came amidst a wave of Israeli-Palestinian violence, which so far saw the death of at least 40 Palestinians and eight Israelis.
It took place as Israel was beefing up security around the country, including the construction of a separation barrier between Palestinian and Jewish neighborhoods in East Jerusalem.
Israel has deployed thousands of police, backed up by hundreds of soldiers, to quell the outbreak of Palestinian attacks, mostly stabbings. However, these measures have so far failed to halt the violence.
